to one’s sorrow使某人悲伤的是
to one’s satisfaction使人满意的是 有时为了强调产生某种情感的程度,可在to后面的名词前加great, deep等形容词或在to前加副词much。如:
①To the surprise of the young couple, they found the necklace missing.
使这对年轻夫妇惊奇的是,他们发现项链不见了。
②To their great joy, the sailors saw land at last.
水手们终于见到陆地了,他们兴奋不已。
③Much to my surprise, she failed in the examination.
使我非常奇怪的是,她考试没及格。
2.have+sb.+doing sth.结构中have是使役动词,意思是“使;让”,doing是动词-ing形式,作宾语补足语。例如: ①Both of them had fire burning all night long, talking heart to heart.
他们两人让火通宵燃烧着,促膝谈心。
②In the busiest season, the peasants had the tractors moving in the fields day and night.
在繁忙季节,农民让拖拉机在地里日夜奔跑。
3.look down upon 意为“看不起;轻视”。例如:
①It’s bad manners to look down upon those students who fall behind.
看不起落后生是不礼貌的。
②In the old society women were looked down upon in China.
在旧社会中国妇女受歧视。
③We shouldn’t look down upon those who are poor.
我们不应该看不起那些贫穷的人们。
4.pick up意为“拣起来,拾起,收听到,染上(疾病)”。例如:
①On the way to school, Mary found a wallet lying on the ground and picked it up. 在上学的路上,玛丽发现地上有一个钱夹,并把它拣了起来。
②He helped me to pick up my pencil which had fallen off my desk.
他帮我把从桌子上掉下来的那只铅笔拣起来。
常用句型结构
1.It seems+that-clause. 意为“看起来似乎是……”,表示猜测或判断,语气比较委婉,不那么肯定。例如:
①It seems that young people are more interested in pop music.
年轻人似乎是对流行音乐更感兴趣。
②It seems that there are more people in the street today.
今天大街上似乎人比较多一些。
③It seems that women’s hands and fingers are quite fit for this kind of job.
女人的手和手指似乎很适合于这项工作。
2.I’m sure there’s nothing that a woman can’t do.
当定语从句的先行词是不定代词(如all, something, nothing等)时,引导词通常要用that,若引导词在从句中作宾语,that常可省略。 例如:
①All that can be done has been done.
能做的一切都已经做了。
②They said nothing that hurt our teacher.
他们没有说过伤害我们老师的话呀。
③We can get anything (that) we want for our work.
我们可以得到我们工作所需要的任何东西。
④Did you know anything that happened last week?
你知道上周发生的什么事吗?
3.I would like her to stay in the company.
这一句型表示“我想要某人干某事”。例如:
①I would like her to offer me her help.
我想要她主动给我提供帮助。
②I would like them to enjoy themselves at the party. 我希望他们大家都能在晚会上玩得开心。
③I would like you to open the window for me.
我想让你为我把窗子打开。
4.She lied to us because she had to in order to get a job.
“…because she had to”后省略了lie to us,以避免重复。英语中常用不定式符号to来代替整个不定式短语,以避免重复。如:
